Conference on Climate Change brings together leading figures and world authorities in Geneva, Switzerland (CP INT)

Among the attendees were the former President of Chile and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet; Yao Ido, the Secretary General of the IPCC, Abdalah Mokssit, Michel André, an expert in bioacoustics and creator of the LIDO technology and Max Bello, from Mission Blue.

Friday, June 24th, 2022.- For the third consecutive year, the Chilean institution, MERI Foundation, belonging to Cortés Solari Philanthropy, held a cycle of conferences on the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), with the purpose of promoting solutions at a local, regional and global level. For this reason, and for the first time, in collaboration with the Swiss bank UBS, they decided to take the discussion outside Latin America and the Caribbean, with the organization of NovoPangea Europe: United for Climate Action.

The reserved event took take place on June 24th in Geneva, Switzerland, at the Hotel InterContinental de Genève. It had three thematic panels that addressed the environment and sustainability as third-generation human rights, nature-based solutions to mitigate climate change, and the role of the so-called “blue economy” for sustainable development.

The event featured the outstanding participation of the former President of Chile and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet; the Secretary General of the IPCC, Abdalah Mokssit; Michel André, expert in bioacoustics and creator of LIDO technology, for monitoring the oceans, the CEO of Cortés Solari Philanthropy, Patricia Morales Errázuriz and the Dr. Maria Neira Director of the Department of Public Health of the Environment at the World Health Organization (WHO).

In addition, two other panelists were Nathalie Hilmi, Head of the Department of Environmental Economics at the Scientific Center of Monaco and lead author of the IPCC and the Chilean expert in marine protected areas and member of Mission Blue, Maximiliano Bello.

The NovoPangea Europe conference was held in collaboration with the Swiss bank, UBS, who was also represented, opening speech from its Executive Vice chairman, Josef Stadler, and Sietse Wouters, Social Finance Specialist as a panelist of the third panel. “Switzerland is a strategic key point in Europe, when we refer to promoting dialogues for climate action, capable of convening the international community. Chile, on its hand, is a unique Natural Laboratory in the world, capable of generating mitigation solutions at a global scale”, emphasized Patricia Morales, CEO of Cortés Solari Philanthropy and adds “Today we seek to promote spaces for multidimensional dialogue, which promote the generation of agreements and consensus on mitigation and adaptation”.

On her side, the Executive Director of Fundación MERI, Sonia Español, added that, “NovoPangea Europe aims to advance the discussion that will take place at COP 27: in Egypt, and highlight the conclusions arising from its version in Latin America and the Caribbean. MERI Foundation will also be present at the UN Ocean Lisbon Conference, sharing the results of these initiatives and the emphasis on the use of science, technology and the importance of international collaboration”.

NovoPangea is the name of a set of conferences on Climate Change that have been held this year. The NovoPangea Latin America version was held on May 26 and 27 in Santiago, Chile, with the purpose of disseminating science for correct decision-making on Climate Change, in addition to promoting citizen participation in environmental matters, all exhibitors are experts in the region; we are incorporating knowledge with an emphasis on knowledge and local relevance.
